Please Note: I expect to be on a short period of paternity leave towards the end of the semester (Mid- late November) at which time another lecturer in 3D design will take over. It is imperative that all design planning and proposals reach their final outcomes for Week 8 leaving only the implementation thereafter.

Week 2 5th Oct

Task: Power point presentations- project outlines and design approach including initial concept sketches.
To include:

  • Project Title
  • Information on the user or market
  • User requirement specification
  • State of the art / prior art
  • Product or market led opportunities
  • Initial ideas and proposals

Must include fully reference research based on fact.

Task: Read lecture notes on Creative Confrontation Methods. Use methods to create Sketch books and the mood / theme boards- bring in work to studio.

Week 5 26th Oct

Concept Critique: 20% Concept design proposals. To include 5 presentation visuals of a high standard (pastel, marker, photoshop, sketch models etc). Must be mounted on A2 Foam board and cleanly and professionally presented. Each board should have a clearly documented rationale and short 2 min presentation. Also to include an ideas sketch book with > 30 proposals.

Software tutorial support- pending duration of Critique.

Mark Cullen and Ryan Magee. Texture Mapping with support from a guest demonstrator- Ryan Magee- Games Artist. Design development and solutions within the CAD environment (Cobalt and Max as appropriate) - One to one tutorial support

Week 10 30th Nov

Development Critique: 20% Development design sketch pads to accompany final proposal Story boarding and colour visuals, illustrating the proposed style and content of the project. Clear evidence of 3D modeling must be evident. The design should have been proposed as a clear plan with all general decisions having been made at this point. A power point presentation including

  • A design specification
  • A developmental sketch book which should include space envelopes and technical problem solving (5 selected key sketches are to be scanned and explained)
  • 3 x A2 description boards defining the features, purpose and use of each component (product, games level etc) of the design (for circulation to the group). These visuals should be also embedded in the presentation
  • A clear discussion of the future work plan should be presented as a task list and timescale for completion.
  • Technical details such as package drawings (automotive), plan layouts (level design for games) or ergonomic drawings/ manufacturing concepts and component layouts for product design briefs.

Week 12 14th Dec

Final Critique- Feedback seminar

Final resolution of designs as an interactive or power point presentation

Presentation should include final submission details outlined in each project brief.

Final Submission

All work must be submitted in a clearly marked Module Portfolio case - check with your tutor to ensure all details are correct

NB. In Reference to Critiques: If the work is not submitted for each of the deadlines, 0% will be recorded.

If work is submitted late on the day of submission, 20% penalty will be applied.
