DES307M1: EPS Nova Innovene '06

Background

EPS (expanded polystyrene) is the white packaging material that as a child (or maybe older) you would have crumpled it up into little beads and pretended it was snow- to the horror of you parents, neighbour etc. It has been around for several decades now and is still one of the best ways of protecting and insulating. Due to the nature of the expanded bead process the forms it can be mould ed to are not limited by constant wall thickness etc. unlike other methods of polymer moulding. The material can also be skinned using different methods of moulding.

Brief

This project will concentrate on both quality and quantity of innovative thinking. It focuses on breadth of design and clever thinking in manufacturing. and innovation in approach to identifying new markets and uses for the material. This should be for both entirely EPS products and combinations of materials for new use.

For competition entries see guidelines

You are requested to submit a sketchbook of ideas for each product theme. Each theme should have mood boards and a clear description of user need and innovative approach. There should be 7-10 different project directions explored (Context and Concept stages), with a final submission of 3 projects resolved and completed using CAD visualisation (development and implementation stages). Each themed project should be treated as short fast mini projects.
