des307-2010-projects

There are a number of project briefs to choose from covering different aspects of 3D design, relating to Product development , Packaging design and 3D character development. These are outlined as follows.

City of Culture street furniture:

Derry/Londonderry has just recently been crowned "UK City of Culture". One of the plans is to improve street furniture across the city and embedding culture within the forms. Using in part or in full the process of Sheet Mould Compound, design a range of street furniture for selected areas of Derry city to promote the ethos of City of Culture. read more >>>

RSA Design projects

Choose one project that closely represents you discipline interest. Note RSA Briefs will have their own specific set of project deliverables for the completion in addition to the deliverables of this module. The RSA briefs also have a range of additional information available online to support each of the briefs

1. Making something disappear:

Choose a product that consumes significant resources to produce and distribute and use design to eliminate its negative impact. Either design the product differently or design a way for people to do without it. (This could be a packaging brief).

2. Action for Age 2: Mind the gap:

Identify a context – your local neighbourhood, institution, a shared interest for instance – and design something that encourages intergenerational connections.

3.  Conflict Resolution

Identify a conflict situation between people in which productive dialogue is difficult, and design a means to make it easier, more spontaneous, fluent, constructive and/or productive in order to create possibilities of agreement.

  • It is expected that there will be collaboration with students on the MA Peace and Conflict Degree pragramme at Magee
  • supporting material - Not Released yet.
  • conflict resolution brief

Dare to be Digital: Games design brief

The Games brief may become part of a collaboration of effort between students in design, Music, and Computing and Intelligent systems towards the Dare to be digital competition which will be launched next semester. Chosen projects may have the opportunity to develop their proposals through the interaction design brief in semester 2. In this open theme competition you can work as a team on the design concept and as individuals develop separate character and environment content.

Future Human Character brief

This brief is a problem based character design project which provides you with a foundation on character design processes. It is evidence based like product design where the character must have a purpose and a role within a certain context and environment. read more>>>

All projects should follow the design process and take you through the following general stages

Research

  • Project Title, expansion of project Brief and rationale- 500 words
  • Mood boards
  • Project timetable

Concept

  • Concept sketch books- What does it look like, what is the purpose and concept?
  • Usability or game play sketch books - What is the human interaction? Demonstrate/ illustrate usability?
  • Concept boards - 3 colour boards illustrating selected designs (A3 format on foam board, carefully trimmed and mounted using spray mount on Foamex board)

Development

  • Construction sketch books - what are the parts/elements, how is is assembled/ what are the levels, what are the functions/ features?
  • Ergonomics- human scale or character scale if within a game. Overlaps with function- user ergonomics, usability.
  • Experimental 3D modelling- form, resolution, space envelopes- proportionate scale and technical accuracy.
  • Preparation of branding, image maps and presentation backdrops.

Implementation

  • Final 3D Digital Model - producing design communication outcomes such as presentation boards, animations and interactive demos.
