This module relies on self-directed student research and studio-based production, it is supported by seminars, tutorials and group critiques.

RATIONALE:

This module is intended as the applied culmination of knowledge and skills gained during the course. A major design project is undertaken which combines all prior understanding/skill in the completion of an integrative design brief that incorporates aesthetic technical, economic and marketing factors. This elective module enables students to specialise in their final semester and prepare the ground to proceed into professional practice on completion of their degree.

AIMS

  • To consolidate knowledge of design research and development within a mature framework leading to innovative outcomes.
  • To consolidate critical awareness & self-management skills.
  • To consolidate independence, design individuality and interests.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the issues informing a major design project. They will consolidate intellectual, professional and transferable skills through their design solution to a complex self-directed design problem.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

A design brief is undertaken that combines all prior knowledge and skills. The 12-wk module is divided into three 4-week blocks, each having a set design task: Wk 1-4 Market/Design Research Report & Project Proposal; Wk 5-8 Project Development, Wk 9-12 Design Project Resolution.

ASSESSMENT

Coursework produced will receive structured feedback during the module delivery via individual tutorials and group seminars. A final mark is awarded during the examination period for the submission of all work produced in the module, to the brief outlined. DES 506 is taken concurrently with DES518.

DES518 is the written component of your final project. 100% Coursework 0% Written Examination
